6 Tips to Transitioning Your Home from Holiday to the New Year
We are oh so reluctant to say goodbye to Christmas time. But, as this season slowly comes to an end, it’s soon time to start thinking about packing up the tree and the rest of your holiday decor. On the bright side, it’s time to pull out new decor to ring in the new year! Here are 6 quick tips on how you can take your home from Christmas cheer to Happy New Year!
One Room at a Time
The reality is that you’ll likely need to pack things up for the season. So, our best suggestion is to start the process one room at a time, carefully repacking the decor you used in each room and labeling each box to make it easier for you to find what you need next Christmas.
This is also a great time to take inventory of what you have. Maybe there were things you didn’t use this year because they’ve become a bit dated or you decided to update your home’s holiday look? Pack those items up and take them to a resale shop or donate them to a local organization. This also helps you to declutter as you move into the new year–It’s a win, win really!
Change up the Color Palette
If you prefer a bit more traditional color palette for Christmas, chances are your home is filled with reds and greens. It’s time to swap out those colors for a brighter, livelier look. Consider a fresh, clean palette–whites and grays, with subtle pops of soft color and add in some silver and gold for a little sparkle if that’s your thing.
If you take a bit more of a non-traditional approach, you may have some silver, gold and bright white colors strewn about already. Great! Consider leaving some of those silver and gold touches. But, be sure to add in some more neutral colors to keep a comfortable tone — after all, it is your home– with grays and whites. Then, bring in subtle colors, like soft mint green, blush pink or even some purple and blue.
Keep with the Winter Theme
If you have favorite decorations, why not keep them out? Reindeer and snowflakes can work all winter season! They mesh well with the bright whites and grays you’re adding in. Keep the house cozy with furry pillows and throws on the couch to snuggle up on snowy days.
Swap out Holiday Greenery & Florals
It’s time to freshen up the florals and greenery. So, put away the poinsettia and holly. But, don’t feel like everything has to go at once… If you like to keep that winter theme, it’s perfectly okay to keep your snow-covered pine cones, pine needles and decorative fir trees. These are great neutral accents to your new additions. If you’re tired of a winter theme, bring in new greenery, like boxwood wreaths, succulents and draping greenery. We love Wilde Horticulture’s fresh greenery, available seasonally.
Switch up Focal Point Decor
Now, it’s time to tackle those festive Christmas centerpieces and focal points you’ve created on your table, atop your mantle or at your entryway. Remove those holiday wreaths and Christmas trees and try adding in some metallic items, like candles holders, vases, and trays.
Mix in some glassware to keep things traditional or add in some white-washed wood accents or antique books on shelves or the mantle to bring in a rustic, farmhouse appeal. Fill metal bowls, vases, decorative pots and ornate champagne buckets with greenery and add in those pops of color with soft blush pink roses or another favorite. Don’t be afraid to mix metals on your mantle or in your table centerpieces for a dynamic look.
Add Some Sparkle
There’s something about the year ahead… It’s shiny and new. So, bring in some shine with crystal-accented decorative bowls or some Swarovski crystal pieces. Have a few glittery, neutral colored ornaments in silver, white or gold? Set them around to help you shine right on in to the new year.
